i24s Joins Statewide Effort in ‘Homelessness Prevention’ During Homelessness Week 2025
5 August 2025

This Homelessness Week (4-10 August 2025), i24s Group (i24s) is walking the talk – literally – as part of a powerful initiative to help prevent homelessness and amplify the voices of those on the front lines.

Championed by Cultural Response Team Manager, Mark Spina, the i24s team will join fellow Outreach service providers from Ruah Community Services and Uniting WA in the ‘Walk a Mile Community Day' – a grassroots event that is taking place in the heart of Perth.

The initiative pairs the community with seasoned Outreach workers, offering a rare opportunity to walk alongside those who work tirelessly to prevent homelessness and support people in crisis.

“When you walk with a worker, you don’t just see the problem – you begin to understand the complex story behind every person sleeping rough,” says Mark. “It’s not just about housing. It’s about trauma, disconnection, systemic failure and the need for culturally responsive care and support.”

With Aboriginal people accounting for over 40 per cent of Western Australia’s (WA) homeless population, despite representing just 3.3 per cent of the State’s total population, i24s’ involvement in Homelessness Week takes on critical significance.

The i24s Cultural Response Team – comprised of Aboriginal professionals with lived and learned experience – delivers trauma-informed, culturally safe outreach and support that recognises the unique needs of First Nations people.

The Cook Government’s newly announced reforms to boost frontline homelessness services across WA will provide much-needed structural support, including enhanced crisis accommodation, tenancy support and investment in Aboriginal-led programs. But as Mark emphasises, “Preventing homelessness requires more than government policy, it also demands urgent community action.”

“We all have a role to play in prevention. Whether it’s showing up, listening, donating, volunteering, employing someone at risk or simply starting a conversation, our collective action is how we change circumstances for the homeless community,” says Mark.
